My new Natural Building blog!

I've been working on getting this together for a while now, and it's finally done! I went to a natural building workshop at the Cob Cottage Company out in Coquille, OR last year and that's where my new blog starts. The first post shows the construction of a small cob cottage, start to finish, and is rather informative. If you're interested in alternative and natural architecture, or ways to improve the world, or have no money and want to build a house then go check it out!

Oh Yes My Friend, It's Camper Time!

For the past few years I've been working at Deer Lake Day Camp in Killingworth, CT as a counselor at first, and more recently, the archery director. Every Thursday afternoon all of the staff runs special activities and games and the kids get to pick whatever they want to do. We call it Camper Time. This year I started running a mini comic/zine thing where the kids can draw whatever they want and I collect it into a half-sheet booklet and print up copies for each of them. The stuff they come up with is totally sweet and I've been getting more and more psyched for each one.

So, my senior show has come and gone. Opening night was way cool and there were a ton of people there to eat our ton of food! I really wish it could have been up longer than a week, it feels like it barely got a chance. Oh well. Just a friendly reminder, December 8th is a whole lot closer than I'd like it to be! Our work is wrapping up nicely and the show should be pretty sweet.

RAD TIMES FOR SURE

Greetings friends!!!!

Coming up on Wednesday, December 8th is the opening night for my graduating exhibition: RAD TIMES FOR SURE with Adam Komosinski & Alison Walsh! I will have my most recent body of ceramic sculpture on display along side Alison's sculpture.

Dates: opening night December 8, 2010 (on display December 6 - 10 if you can't make it)

Time: 4:30pm - 8 or 9, whenever things really slow down.

Location: The upstairs gallery in Earl Hall, Southern Connecticut State University.

Come by and check out some sweet sculpture, talk to some people, eat some food. It'll be a pretty cool time, you should probably come.

Cob!

So I spent a month in Coquille, Oregon at the Cob Cottage Company participating in a workshop. We built a small kitchen and desking area as an addition to an existing structure. It's the left-most third of the building. Right now it's a little unfinished overall, but it should look like this eventually.

At some point or another I'll be making a blog to share my pictures from the workshop and chronicle any natural building and cob related things I do.

Hand Building 1

These are both from my first ceramics class, Hand Building 1, from the Spring 2008 semester. This is one of the Argonath from The Lord of the Rings, made from two slabs:

This is a model of a cob house. It's still bone-dry in the pictures, but I never glazed it, so it doesn't look too different now. I may glaze it some day, and seed the roof with chia grass or herbs like I had planned. The passive solar design would make the house pretty warm if you actually built it:

Series 2 - Drawing 2

I have always found overly masculine, dominating, and self-glorifying artwork to be ridiculous, so what better subject for for my second series! I settled on doing self portraits for the self-glorification aspect, something which greatly amuses and annoys me. This was also quite a learning experience with the pastels, as I was still building up my comfort level with them when I started.

I ended up drawing on some established characters, gods, etc. in the later four. Number one is me, with no established character implied. And yes, the cheetah could be better, and bigger. Number two is a toss-up between King Triton or Poseidon. Number three references St. Michael Vanquishing Satan by Raphael, 1518. Number four is Conan with an erupting Mt. Doom from The Return of the King. Number five is Thor, the Marvel version of course. The runes on Thor's throne are Old English and read "Gettin' Laid, Gettin' Paid."

My drawing professor, Thuan Vu, has us do two series per semester. You choose the subject and it must have at least five pieces. I had recently fallen in love with a Pentel brush with a built-in ink reservoir, so I picked a subject and style that suited it. Thus: noodly lines! (Also, I seem to have lost the first one, but it wasn't as good as the rest anyway)
